“The subject that I am to have the pleasure of presenting is The Acquisition of the Political, Social, and Industrial Rights of Man.

It would seem to fall naturally into the three divisions mentioned, but in covering the period from the opening of’ the Revolution down to the middle of the nineteenth century neither one of these great struggles has been continuous. There have been periods of great activity, followed by periods of apparent indifference. I have thought it best, therefore, to present all three in the order in which they happen to fall chronologically.” – Excerpt from the Book

John Bach McMaster was an American historian born in Brooklyn, New York.  He graduated from the College of the City of New York in 1872.  In 1883 he became a professor of American history in the University of Pennsylvania.  He was elected a member of the American Antiquarian Society and American Philosophical Society in 1884.
